I suppose that GuildWiki new player's guide would be a fine place to start.

Generally GuildWiki has information on everything about Guild Wars, so I'd recommend searching there if you want some information.

i agree one tip that may help you out if you have a fast connection is to download the game from guildwars.com then install it....then after it installs "edit" the shortcut and put in -image after the command line should look something like

"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\GW.EXE" -image

this will download all files to your PC and you won't have to download files while you are playing the game or entering a new area...up to you tho :P

Good luck...

www.guildwiki.org. learn how to use it, it'll be your best friend.

For what its worth the best place to start would be - at the beginning.

While there is great advice for new players online, there is nothing stopping you from exploring the world on your own. In fact, I found that 90% of the stuff online confused me more than helped me when I first started. Enjoy the beginning, which is called "pre-searing". It is one the loveliest parts of the game, and you won't really "miss anything" by not having a guide. Don't worry, the missions will guide along as to where you need to be, and don't be afraid to go back and visit old places now and then too. Explore alone or with a friend, it doesn't matter much.

The biggest pieces of advice I could give a new player -

1) Try ALL the secondary profession quests before picking one. You may like one more than you think (or less), and either way, it's just that much more experience, gold and fun for you.

2) Try to get up to level 7 or 8 before moving on the main chapters, also called "post searing". That's the war against the Char. Once you go past that point, you can't go back to pre-searing (unless you start a new char).

While there is lots of other useful advice, most of it you'll learn along the way. There are lots of helpful people in the game, so when you find a nice person, add them to your friends list (press N). Ask what guild they belong to, maybe you'll want to join.

Played casually, the game could last for months, and even then, going after titles and attending events makes the game last for years, not to mention the other campaigns available.

Welcome!

Welcome to guru and to GW.

As for tips for the beginner area, enjoy it. It's designed to introduce you slowly to the game.

1. read the beginner section for Prophecies in the guildwiki. Especially the checklist and the scams.

2. Try different primary professions. You have four character slots to play with and can delete characters if you find you don't care for that style of gameplay.

3. You don't need a guild to play the game. If you want to join one, shop around for one that fits your needs. (Check out the Guild Connections section here on guru.)

4. Ask questions here and in-game - in both places, ignore the idiots spamming noob insults.

Welcome to Guild Wars!

The biggest piece of advice I can give you when starting out is to take your time and don't rush things. You start off in pre-searing Ascalon which is full of easy monsters so you can take as much time as you like learning all about your chosen profession and how to use your skills together to make basic combos. Just relax, try out lots of different things, and enjoy yourself

Welcome to GW!

Everything said so far is great advice. Take your time, have fun, and don't be afraid to ask questions!

A couple things I'll add:

1. Be sure to get your character up to level 7 or 8 before going to the acadamy.

2.Do NOT sell any dyes you may get until after you go to the acadamy. After that, you'll find a dye trader that will pay you MUCH more than 1 gold (Black & White dyes are worth thousands!)

3. Talk to any NPCs you encounter during your adventures, especially collectors, you can get some decent things from them that will save you gold for other things.

There should be many more quests available to you if you're only level 5. You never need to grind to get to level 20 Take a look around!

Hmm, I doubt you managed to do all the quests and still only be at lvl 5. Try walking about a bit, talk to everyone with a green mark above their head (except the guy at the closed town gates, he takes you further through the game).

As for later, you probably shouldn't bother. Anything you get in presearing is inferior functionally to the gear available later.

What you really should do is walk around a bit, explore the map, see how pretty it is, talk to the people. You only get to see it once without starting a new character. Sights I'd recommend:

-Try going north, past the wall (you'll need someone else to open the gates for you). See the Charr pyres, and watch how the weather changes as you approach them. Look at the charr effigies, too, and keep them in mind.

-Explore the southern snowy areas and the little fishing village there.

-Explore the catacombs. I'v got three characters past presearing, and I still don't think I've managed to explore the whole catacombs...

The wiki has a quest list also. Check it to see if you missed any quests.

The reason we say to try for level 7/8 before entering the academy and moving on to the main part of the game, is that the enemy level and actions change drastically from pre-sear. You will get attacked by multiple foes and they will be more difficult to kill. It will be harder to join parties with a low level.

You will need gold and materials to upgrade your armor in post-searing. Again, the wiki Armor section will tell you the costs. Weapons will start having attribute requirements and each level increases your ability to use them effectively.

sorry. i have a few questions to ask.

with regards to armour, i dont see any where in the game where it displays the total amount of armour that i have. also how does armour work?. is it like damage reduction or evasion etc etc?. could someone kindly pt me to a thread where i can read more about it?

next, i'm a warrior, i read the discription about the strenght attribute, it says it improves strenght skills and dmg by 1% or smth, however i can't really tell of the dmg increase and beginning to see its not so worth to place tat much skill points in strenght.

oh btw i'm level 7 now hehehe. doign allt he quest in presearing just to ensure i got everything i need before moving on.

thanks guys.

I could explain armour but this explains better.

Strength only adds armor penetration to your attack skills so as you rightly point out, it's not hugely important.

To see a discription of your armor, open your Inventory and mouse over your armor pieces shown to the right of your character's image. That will give armor level, modifiers, and any runes you've got attached to it.

Guild Wars does not use a system like that. You cannot see the total sum of the armor you're wearing, because the game does not take this into account (and therefore showing the total sum would be a redundant feature).

Guild Wars uses a hit location system to calculate damage. If you get hit in the chest, the only armor level that gets taken into account is your chest armor. If you take a hit to the feet, the only armor level that gets taken into account is your boots. Some parts of your character's body are more likely to get hit than other parts, though.

However, if you are using a shield (or another offhand item that has an armor modifier on it) or you are under the effects of something like an enchantment that gives bonus armor, these are global effects and the extra armor from them will be taken into account wherever you are hit.

behling, my advice for you is NOT use any guide at all for your first PvE character(s), just forget about it! You are ruining the surprises this game gives to you when reading spoilers

Just make a new character (you say you have the first GW chapter) and enjoy, you DON'T need guides, for now.

Just one tip for you (the only tip I really needed when I started) Some rare materials and black color dyes, etc, are expensive only when you sell it to the right merchant, the normal one give you nothing and you lose a lot of gold.
